Starting a Law Firm in Massachusetts

The practice of law is a business and a profession. To successfully start your own law firm, you must accept to see it as both. It was my moment of clarity. Two months later, I left that firm and opened my own law firm. Most lawyers will proudly tell you that their entire firm is focused on their clients. While this is true in a sense – lawyers represent their clients and meet their legal needs – it`s not what we mean by client-focused services. Total annual expenses = $2,334 (I will reconsider my associations next year. They are all currently active after being paid by my former law firm) Branding and developing your marketing strategy takes time, but are essential to growing your new law firm. Look at all the potential marketing avenues for your business, and then commit to implementing the ones that work best based on your company`s overall goals. While staffing may be the furthest from your head, the second you think about expanding your business (independent contractors, part-time employees, accountants, office managers), you need to consider your values and how you treat those who join you. This means that if you`re a lawyer with an entrepreneurial spirit, risk tolerance, and goals around what you want to build, you can and should start your own law firm. If you`re not sure where to start, the following tips can be a good place to start, so read on to learn more about opening your law firm in the state of Massachusetts. When you start dreaming about your firm`s vision, remember that your firm – and all law firms – should provide client-centric services, stay current with technology, embrace for-profit business models, and (hopefully) help our profession improve access to equity and inclusion.

We believe these are the key elements to building forward-thinking businesses. You now have all the tools you need to develop a solid strategy and start your new business with confidence. Congratulations on becoming a legal entrepreneur! After choosing the name, you need to form the legal entity and select the organizational structure. If you are alone, choose a single practitioner, but if your practice has several members, you can choose a partnership, LLC or even a professional company. As a new business, create goals and determine the best path forward for your technology to support those goals. At the very least, it also means that building a business that focuses on your customer might require you: that`s where we come in. Not only have we started and grown our own successful law firms, but we have also helped thousands of lawyers do the same. Sure, we could write an entire book on the topic (actually, we did – check it out here), but we`ll use this guide to highlight some key points and point you in the right direction. We will be frank with you – setting up a law firm can be quite expensive.

You need money to pay the rent, invest in your office, pay salaries, and cover all the costs of starting a business. Before thinking about the name and location of your new law firm, you need to assess your financial needs. When a lawyer we know founded his law firm, he tried to apply the principles of large business to the practice of small business. He soon realized that it was catastrophic. He took on tools he didn`t need and processes that were too complicated. Despite his best intentions, he bled money. As you develop your marketing strategy, you can identify the ways you will initially use to attract new customers. At a minimum, you need to budget for basic marketing elements like business cards, someone to design and create your law firm`s website, and activities to attract your ideal client. Your budget should likely include eating with leads and leads, as well as a plan to experiment with other paid marketing options. My job is contingency, with a year + deadline for many types of cases. I hope to win many/most of the clients of my former company. I have about 50 clients that I deal with exclusively or mainly with an average fee of $4500 or less.

I will share these costs with the old company, but at a rate/amount that we have not yet calculated. I am still working with the company I am leaving to prepare the joint letter to the applicants. You need a solid strategy to attract the right customers to your business. Next, you need to make sure you have systems, procedures, and the right technology in place to consistently deliver a superior customer experience. When you start a practice, you have to spend money at the beginning – this is not optional. Based on our experience and data over the years, $3,000 is a good place to start, but $5,000 to $15,000 is more realistic when opening your first law firm. Costs depend on a variety of variables such as location, area of practice, advertising, etc. Starting a law firm can be the best decision you`ll ever make. In fact, it was for many of us! Unfortunately, most law schools are designed to teach you how to think like a lawyer and don`t spend much time teaching you how to start and run a business.

Office management seems stifling, but it`s so important to be right at first. Dig deeper into key areas to streamline your office management and set your business up for success. You`ll hear people say that your vision should be an eye-catching line that you can throw away during networking nights. We do not agree on that. Yes, your vision should be clear, measurable, and easy to talk about, but condensing your dreams and plans into a single sentence can be limiting. Use this time to write as much as necessary. This is the first step in laying the foundation for your company`s KPIs. Lawyers who build client-centric businesses recognize the importance of documented systems and procedures.

You`ll streamline your work, create a better customer experience, reduce errors, delegate work more easily, manage your team better, and create a business that is easier to scale and eventually sell. Forward-thinking lawyers stay ahead of their practice management needs by focusing on a few key principles: Client expectations are changing rapidly.
