Yale University Law School Scholarship

For the 2021-2022 academic year, 76% of our Young Girls students received some form of financial aid and 64% were eligible for institutional scholarships from the Faculty of Law. For scholarship students, the median amount is about $31,120, and 79% receive about $20,000 or more. In total, Yale Law School provided $12 million in institutional support to its Young Women candidates. Grants from the institutional resources of the Faculty of Law and through the generosity of our endowed scholarship funds are awarded exclusively on the basis of the institution`s needs-based assistance calculation described above. There are law schools that can hire professors primarily with the promise of excellent teaching, but for most law schools, the quality of potential scholarships is a deciding factor. In most schools, the most important factor in obtaining a tenure-track law teaching position is proven academic achievement, i.e. writing. Most successful applicants have published at least one legal journal article and have also written at least one completed manuscript (their employment discussion paper). Many have other publications and/or work in progress. In fact, the number of letters a candidate is expected to have completed varies widely between law schools that hire junior professors. ⇒Please note: Some merit scholarships, such as the Gates Millennium Scholarship and the NCAA grant, may also cover the cost of Yale Health`s hospitalization/specialty care insurance. If approved by the awarding body, an Excellence Scholarship may also cover the cost of a computer for incoming students whose external assistance exceeds the student`s share. If you have any questions about whether these circumstances apply to you, please contact our office.

The new Soledad `92 and Robert Horizon scholarship program will provide 45 to 50 full scholarships to Young Women students and will provide more than $70,000 per student annually to cover tuition, fees and health insurance. It will be extended to current students in the 2023, 2024 and 2025 classes whose family income is below the federal poverty line and whose assets are less than $150,000 for the remainder of their Yale experience, Yale Law School wrote in a press release. Bursary: $1,000 (three scholarships per month) To be eligible for the Horizon grant, the student`s family must have an income below the federal poverty line and family assets must be less than $150,000. An additional $4,000 bursary will be awarded as part of the student`s financial support for the academic year. Funding is cut in half and the student receives an additional $2,000 in financial aid at the beginning of each semester. The financial aid office uses income data provided through the MAAS and the parent-reported AGM to determine who meets the criteria. New students must submit a copy of their parents` tax return for verification of income. “We are committed to opening our doors to the students who can benefit most from this school and give the most to the world, regardless of their means,” Gerken said. “I am very pleased that we will be able to make this exceptional addition to an already best-in-class financial assistance system. The Horizon Scholarship Program will free students who need it most from financial worries during law school and open up a world of possibilities so they can be a powerful force for change in society.

Special or endowment scholarships, such as those listed in the Law School Bulletin, are awarded only to students with demonstrated financial need and do not increase grants. Questions about assessing a student`s eligibility for certain criteria for an endowment award are included in FAAST and, therefore, no separate application is required. If the student is notified that their needs-based institutional scholarship has been supported by one of our endowment funds, they will be asked to submit a resume and may be asked to write a thank you note to the donor for stewardship purposes. Students may also have the opportunity to meet directly with donors or thank them in other ways. Horizon grants are awarded to students with a family income below federal poverty guidelines and assets of less than $150,000. Students who meet the financial requirements automatically receive a scholarship that fully covers the cost of tuition, fees, and health insurance. The program is Yale Law School`s latest scholarship and financial aid offering, following the introduction of the $4,000 annual Horizon grant last year. If you`re not a U.S.

citizen or permanent resident, you`re eligible for the same amount of need-based assistance — that is, grants and loans — as any other student. You don`t qualify for U.S. federal loans, but you can apply for university loans that don`t require a U.S. citizen as a co-signer. Yale Law School is one of only two law schools in the country to provide assistance solely on a financial basis, and 73% of students received scholarships in the 2020-2021 academic year. Through these extensive financial aid programs, Yale law students graduate with the lowest debt burden of any even-numbered school. The Horizon Scholarship Program builds on these comprehensive financial support offerings to adapt to the changing needs of students. Since 2016, the Faculty of Law has admitted the six most diverse classes in its history. In the class of 2024, more than a quarter of students are the first in their family to attend an advanced or vocational school, and about one in six is the first in their family to graduate from university. “The Horizon Scholarship Program will free students who need it most from financial worries during law school and open up a world of possibilities so they can be a powerful force for change in society.” – Dean Heather K. Gerken The Yale Fellowship can range from a few hundred dollars to more than $70,000 per year. The average Yale scholarship based on need is over $50,000.

Yale Law School is providing significant funding to launch the program this fall, offering approximately 45 to 50 full scholarships to eligible Young Women students. Students who meet the financial requirements will automatically receive the scholarship, starting with courses in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and in the future. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Soledad `92 and Robert, David `78 and Patricia Nierenberg, and Gene `73 and Carol Ludwig, the law school is also able to staff the program and ensure that future YLS students will benefit from this life-changing initiative for generations to come. Although Yale does not award merit-based scholarships, Yale students often qualify for merit awards from other organizations. The criteria for receiving merit scholarships are directly related to a student`s performance in science, sports, music or any other area of special interest. Possible sources of merit-based scholarships include: The law school does not award merit-based or criteria-based scholarships. The maximum possible grant is the amount of tuition fees (exceptions apply).

The same needs-based calculation applies to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students, who are similarly selected for eligibility for institutional scholarships. Scholarships or grants from outside sources are applied to the loan portion of a dollar-for-dollar scholarship at Yale Law School. Note – regardless of the amount of the external scholarship, you must inform the Financial Aid Office of the source and amount of the scholarship as soon as possible. Private student loans are offered by private lenders such as banks and credit unions. Unlike federal loans, which are guaranteed by the federal government, the terms of private student loans vary from lender to lender. It is important to ask questions when you decide to take out a personal loan so that you can compare the terms and choose the one that best suits your needs.
