Employment of cytotechnologists in the United States: Under CLIA `88-Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, all persons practicing cytology in the United States must have completed a cytotechnology program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Therefore, an individual earning CT (ASCPi) or CTgyn (ASCPi) or SCT (ASCPi) certifications would not be qualified to practice in the United States under CLIA `88. The American Medical Technologists (AMT) was founded in 1939. The organization is a nationally and internationally recognized certification body and a member company. The Donor Phlebotomy Technician (DPT) certification will be replaced by a qualification as of January 1, 2022. The final certification exam for TPD (ASCP) will take place on December 30, 2021, with a deadline of 1. October 2021 for receipt of the application. TPD Certified Individuals (ASCP) retain their certification and continue to participate in the Maintenance of Credentials Program (PGC). From 1 January 2022, a qualification will be offered in donor phlebotomy (QDP). The admission requirements have been revised and the exam is conducted online as a 50-point exam. For more information, see www.ascp.org/boc/qdp.
If a high school diploma or college credits or degree is required to meet the admission requirements, you must request that an official transcript be sent to the OAC office. You must allow at least 10 business days after receiving the transcript for the review. Certification is a voluntary process; However, most employers prefer to hire certified practitioners. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take exams to obtain the ASCP Certification Council National Certification (ASCP-BOC). We encourage all graduates of our programs to become certified, as it is an investment in your future in the profession. We recommend scheduling your exam shortly after graduation (give yourself some time to review it!) while everything you`ve learned is fresh in your mind. Additional application information for certification exams will be provided to students prior to the end of the program. As of May 12, 2020, all candidates will be required to wear a face mask or face covering for the duration of their exam at a Pearson VUE test site.
It is the candidate`s responsibility to bring a face mask or face covering that completely covers the nose and mouth. If a candidate comes to the test centre without a mask, they may be denied the test and must reapply and submit a new test registration fee at a later date. Regularly review the latest health and safety requirements at Pearson VUE test centers. From 1 January 2022, a qualification will be offered in donor phlebotomy (QDP). This qualification replaces the Donor Phlebotomy Technician (DPT) certification with an application deadline of October 1, 2021. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science and Clinical Laboratory Science program, CLS students can be certified as Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS (ASCP)). Please note that testing centers follow all federal, state, and local guidelines regarding COVID-19. Please be aware of all local requirements for masks, etc. before you arrive at your test center. Regularly review the latest health and safety requirements at Pearson VUE test centers. Please note that continuing education courses are not accepted to meet academic requirements. The mission of American Medical Technologists (AMT) is to promote, manage, expand, and continually improve its certification programs for related healthcare professionals in a variety of settings.
While each country has different requirements for employment as a laboratory professional, ASCP BOC recommends that anyone interested in using an ASCPi designation for immigration purposes in any country ensure they are aware of government requirements. For individuals immigrating to the United States or seeking permanent residency, the ASCPi designation does not circumvent state or federal labor regulations. although employers and licensing bodies in several states recognize some ASCPi references for practice. If college credits are required for the qualification, you must provide an official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university with the seal of the college or university, the signature of the registrar and the date your degree was awarded, or an original or notarized copy of an acceptable transcript evaluation showing the equivalency of the diploma and the distribution of subjects. Please note that continuing education courses are not accepted to meet academic requirements. Direct conduct, training and/or management/oversight of ISC procedures is acceptable to meet experience requirements. As of January 1, 2021, all PBT, TPD and MLA applicants must submit official transcripts to verify high school diploma or equivalency to meet admission requirements. Admission to a program or institution does not verify compliance with these academic requirements. Students in a NAACLS, CAAHEP or ABHES program Registration for the exam depends on the successful completion of your program and all academic requirements. You may take the exam once before an official high school diploma transcript, college courses, and/or your diploma has been received and processed by the ASCP BOC. STEP 2: Review the ASCP certification eligibility requirements for the appropriate ASCP certification exam category (MLS/CLS, BB, SBB, C, SC, M, SM, H or SH, MLT, MB, CG or International MLS) to ensure that you meet these requirements. ASCP certification is a professional certification sought after by pathologists, laboratory technicians and technologists.

NCA was founded in 1978 as a peer-reviewed certification body in response to pathologists` concerns about clinical laboratory control (CLS) and acted as an independent agency sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) and the Association of Genetic Technologists. Generalist certifications issued by the NCA lead to the qualifications of Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS (NCA)) and Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT (NCA)). The BOR is an agency of the ASCP and the general BOR certifications are Medical Technologist [MT (ASCP)] and Medical Laboratory Technician [MLT (ASCP)]. In the first half of 2005, there were 976 BOR-MT test samples; The NCA assessed 521 CSRC applicants throughout 2005. The American Medical Technologists (AMT) is a certification and membership organization for the community of related health professionals.
