A minor is a person under the age of 18. Minors must have their application signed (for a change of DL or DL class) by their parents or guardians. If both parents/guardians have joint custody, both must sign. Your licence is not valid until you start driver training. Your instructor will sign the approval to validate it. You must practice with a licensed California driver: parent, guardian, driving instructor, spouse or adult who is 25 years of age or older. The person must sit close enough to you to take control of the vehicle at all times. A preliminary licence does not allow you to drive alone at all times, not even to a DMV branch to take a driving test. If a minor under the age of eighteen applies for a trial licence, a limited licence or a temporary instruction permit, the Registrar shall notify the signing adult of the application of the possible liability that may be assigned to the adult under division (B) of this division and how the adult can prevent the adult from being held liable under this division. If you are under the age of 18 and are not married or emancipated, you will need the consent of a parent or guardian to obtain a license or permission. Applicants for non-state minors must meet the requirements listed in the “Minor Permit Requirements” section on page 12. In addition, if your driver training and driving courses were taken in a state other than California, DMV may accept a non-California School Form (DL 33) completed by the out-of-state high school.
You can get a DL 33 at your local DMV branch or by calling DMV at 1-800-777-0133. Send the LD 33 to your out-of-state high school and ask them to fill it out and send it back to you. You will be asked to submit your out-of-state DL and take a knowledge test as part of the application process. The driving test for non-state LD holders is usually cancelled. However, DMV may require a driving test for any type of DL application. When you reach the age of 18, the “provisional” part of your DL ends. You can keep your preliminary DL photo or pay a fee for a duplicate DL without the word “provisional”. The law allows the following exceptions if adequate transportation is not available and it is necessary to drive. A signed note explaining the need to drive and the date on which this need to drive ends must be kept in your possession for the following exceptions (emancipated minors are exempt from this requirement): Provisional authorization is only valid when you begin your driving training with an instructor or reach the age of 17 and a half. If you have a license and plan to drive outside of California, check the licensing requirements in that state or country.
Provide id to verify your identity. ET (C) Any person who has signed a minor`s application for a licence or permit under eighteen years of age may surrender the minor`s licence or temporary admission permit to the Registrar and request that the licence or permit be cancelled. The Registrar will then withdraw the temporary admission licence or permit, and the person who signed the minor`s application will be released from the responsibility imposed by Division (B) of this Division. You can complete the driver`s license and ID card application online, and your parent or guardian can sign the form electronically. The signature is recorded electronically in a branch of the electronic application. If the parent or guardian is unable to sign at a local office, they must give their consent to the parent or guardian`s attestation form. The parent or guardian who gave you consent to the request may ask DMV to revoke your license or authorization. This can be done up to the age of 18. You must use the Request for Cancellation of Driving Privileges by Parents or Guardians form. You do not need to retake the tests unless your license or approval has expired for more than a year. You can apply to recover your driving privilege if: Once you have your provisional DL, you can drive alone as long as you don`t have collisions or traffic violations in your driving record. For the first 12 months after receiving the license, you will not be able to drive between 11 p.m.
and 5 a.m. and will not be able to carry passengers under the age of 20 unless you are accompanied by a parent or guardian licensed in California, a driver with a driver`s license in California who is 25 years of age or older, or a licensed or certified instructor. (A) The Registrar of Motor Vehicles may not grant an application for a trial permit, a limited permit or a temporary entry permit to minors under eighteen years of age, unless the application is signed by a parent of the minor, the minor`s guardian, another person who has custody of the applicant or, if there is no parent or guardian. a responsible person who is willing to assume the obligation imposed under this Section. The Registrar shall normally prescribe the appropriate types of identification for the purposes of this subsection. If the adult signing the application does not have an identity document in accordance with this paragraph, the application shall not be accepted. Provide a state- or country-issued ID card or a letter from the state agency to verify your identity.
